Jimi Hendrix

The Guitar Hero DVD

Review by Gary Hill

It should be mentioned at the start that, while this is a new release, it’s a reissue and not a new documentary. This originally came out in 2009/ It should also be noted that this is an unofficial documentary. That means you won’t get Hendrix music here except for a very few clips.

What you will get is a documentary composed largely of interviews. For MSJ fans some of those interviews probably stand out, including Lemmy and Chris Squire. I was really pleased that they included Hawkwind’s “Silver Machine” in the video.

Taking this as it is, it’s a solid documentary. Hardcore Hendrix fans probably won’t learn a lot. As a big fan of Chris Squire, his stories were nothing new for me, but they are always fun to hear. It’s a pretty solid bet that you haven’t heard all of the insights here from all of the various people. Hearing others relating tales you might not have previously heard is worthwhile. Honestly, this is a pretty balanced and thoughtful documentary – as long as you recognize it for what it is.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2025  Volume 3. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2025.
