Jim Morrison

Rock Poet DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is a new issue of a documentary from 2010. How many times has the story of Jim Morrison and The Doors been told? I bet that number is high. So, how can any documentary feel fresh? Well, even 15 years later, this pulls it off. That’s because this showcases a side of Morrison that is often overlooked. Jim Morrison – the poet. Specifically this documentary looks at the legacy of Morrison through the lens of the beat movement. I’ve personally always seen that connection. I think Morrison really embodied so much of the Beat movement. And, as such, his poetry reflected it. So, I think this documentary helped to reinforce a lot of the conclusions I had already come to. As such I found it refreshing. For those who are tired of the same old stories about the Lizard King, this will likely also be an eye-opener. I recommend this documentary highly. I should mention, though, don’t come here looking for bonus materials because there really aren’t any here. The documentary itself does include some great insights from people who were in the scene at the time.
