Carl Verheyen

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Carl Verheyen from 2016
MSJ:

It’s been a year or so since we last interviewed you. What’s been going on in the world of Carl Verheyen in that time?

I made a new record at Sweetwater in Fort Wayne, Indiana called “The Grand Design.” There was a documentary film made about the making of the record, and the premier was last night at the theater at Sweetwater. I stay busy in LA doing studio work, producing and giving master classes.
MSJ: What's ahead for you?
I start an east coast tour on Saturday in Newport, Kentucky (across the river from Cincinnati) that goes up to Chicago and into Canada, then all the way down to Florida. We do a west coast tour in September then a European trip in October and November.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
I was in Austria last month playing a festival and I bought a CD of waltzes by Strauss. The way the orchestra follows the conductor is amazing. The ebb and flow of the tempo is all dictated by the conductor, and the Vienna orchestra is such a great band!
MSJ: Have you read any good books lately?
I’m always reading, and I’m currently into a book about John Coltrane’s influence on all the musicians that followed him since he passed away on the late 60s.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
My ex drummer plays with David Gilmour now and we saw his concert in LA last month. It was fabulous and made me really “homesick” for another Supertramp tour.
