Roine Stolt

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Roine Stolt from 2016
MSJ:

It’s been quite a while since we had a chance to catch up with you. What has been new in the world of Roine Stolt?

I’m currently on tour with Steve Hackett in USA - I’ve been touring with Steve since August last year - we’ve done almost 80 shows in Europe and America. Great fun playing old Genesis songs and his early solo material and Steve is a lovely guy - we have lots of fun.
MSJ: What can you tell me about your new project with Jon Anderson?
Jon and I started to work on fragments of songs already in Summer 2014 - we’ve been bouncing ideas for a long time. We’ve worked with an open mind - not trying to create a new “Yes” album by design - we just tried to create new music - find our way and let the music take us into new directions. Fortunately I get the chance to work with so many great musicians and people and this new album again was something special, working with Jon – and a way to learn more about myself and about music and his world of music and thinking.
MSJ: What's ahead for you?
Next project is a recording session in June for a Kaipa Da Capo album (it’s the band I was in at the age of 18. my first pro band) We go in and play it as a band - together - just like we did in 70s - as little fixes as possible -  very old school , lots of Hammond, moog and mellotron, and old amps etcetera. - trying to "get back to the garden” …...

And then I’m doing a few remixes and a surround 5.1 mix of the Anderson/Stolt album. That’ll be exciting. I  look at  alternate mixes and odd outtakes for this LTD box set. It’ll be the ultimate version - probably arriving before Christmas.

MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
Last music I paid for was probably David Bowies Blackstar or maybe Vangelis …that weather theme album….
MSJ: Have you read any good books lately?
No - terrible - isn’t it.
MSJ: What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?
I saw U2 in London O2 arena. Fantastic show -loved every minute of it.
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2016  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
