Julie Slick

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Julie Slick from 2017
MSJ:
It's been about six or seven years since we last interviewed you. Can you catch the readers up on what's been going on in your world?

Oh man, where to start? Since 2010, I've released another solo album Terroir (2012), toured Europe, Australia, North America and Japan with Crimson ProjeKct (2011-14), have become a nomadic gypsy and started a new band with fellow bassist Marco Machera called "EchoTest." We've just put out our third record, From Two Balconies, and it's myproudest work to date. I feel like these songs have been fully realized, reaching their maximum potential. This is our take on a classic rock concept album.

MSJ:
What's ahead for you?
Well, I've been on the road around the world with the Adrian Belew Power Trio since February... in June we head to Australia for a five-night residency in Melbourne.

In July I see myself sleeping for the entire month, but in reality, I'll probably be hard at work on EchoTest's next album, as well as remixing our second LP Le Fil Rouge for a vinyl release. I plan to debut that as well as promote From Two Balconies with tours across Europe and America this fall.

MSJ:
What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
I've been really getting into A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead... I can only really digest one album at a time, and it usually takes me a year or sometimes two to move on. I'm not a prolific consumer of music (especially while on tour), but I do enjoy delving in and studying the work of others.
MSJ:
Have you read any good books lately?
Oy, I wish I had enough time for that...
MSJ:
What about the last concert you attended for your enjoyment?

We had a rare day off before our show in São Paulo, and our promoter informed us that one of my favorite bands, Tortoise, was playing in town that night. Adrian and I went, and we scurried right up to the front... of course within 30 seconds he was taking selfies with Discipline-tattooed concert goers.  After the show we got to say hello to the band, and it really was a full circle moment for many of us... a beautiful moment that involved tears of joy.

MSJ:
Do you remember your first concert?
Of course! It was Dire Straits at the Spectrum in Philadelphia in 1992... I was six.
MSJ:
Have you come across any new gear recently that you love?
I'm playing a five-string for the first time ever this year! Lakland built me an absolutely gorgeous 5564 (precision style) bass in Coral Pink (a la Tony Levin). I can't believe I've waited 20 years to expand my palette to the lower register... I'm totally addicted now and wish I had a low B string on my Bass VI (rendering it a Bass VII).
MSJ:

Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?

How about some shameless promotion?
