Don’t Kill the Whale (Single) (Vinyl)

Review by Gary Hill

Our old rule at Music Street Journal was, if it’s out of print, we don’t review it. Well, with the availability of items on Amazon.com and Ebay, that just seems outdated. So, I’m going back and looking at some of the little items I’ve got around here that might have value to our readers and reviewing them. This single is noteworthy for the B-Side. Mind you, you can get it on some CDs, but if you just want this song in its original release, this isn’t too expensive when you find it. I have reviewed both of these songs previously at MSJ and for the sake of consistency I’m using those reviews here.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2014  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Side A
Don't Kill the Whale
This is a somewhat funky rocker that seems a bit contrived by today's standards. It is still a very good song, and features a strong vocal dominated segment towards the end. That vocal segment is followed by a potent guitar driven outro.
Side B
Abilene
Wind and the neighing of horses start this. The cut kinds in with a melodic Yes balladic style. This gets rather bouncy and a bit more involved as it carries on. Howe solos overtop of much of this.
