The Quick & Easy Boys

Follow Us Overboard

Review by Gary Hill

The mix of sounds here is pretty extreme. At times, this seems like it doesn’t come from the same outfit. Yes, there is that much variety here. It’s all quality stuff, though. There are some moments that are purely amazing. There are some others that don’t work as well for me. Still, as a whole, it’s quite good.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Breathe

There’s a symphonic, almost art rock introduction to this. Then they launch out to some of the tastiest funk I’ve heard in a long time. This is great stuff. It just oozes cool.

Blame on Me
This is sort of a weird interlude with all kinds of layers of vocals and other oddities. It’s got a rhythmic vibe, but is more textural than anything else.
Die
Somehow, this seems to have some hints of 80s pop rock on the vocals. It’s a high energy tune, though with modern elements. This doesn’t grab me as much as the opener did, but it’s quite good. The harder rocking section mid=track is quite cool.
Love Will Go
This is a strange little hip hop thing. It’s not my favorite for sure, but it’s fairly short.
Heart Is Torn
There is a modern sound here, yet it also has some psychedelia and vintage soul in the mix. I love this song. The raw instrumental section adds a different angle, too. This is such a cool number.
I Go Walking
After a rather odd little introduction section, they bring this into a pop rock arrangement that is very retro in texture. There is definitely a 1950s kind of thing going on here. Still, it has some psychedelia built into along with more modern elements, too. The horns add a lot to the later high energy sections.
Better Way to Heaven
This short tune is bouncy, fun and a little weird. It’s very psychedelic in a lot of ways.
Worry Myself
There is definitely a lot of 1950s rock and roll built into this energetic beast. I like this one, but it’s not one of my favorites.
Chasing Shadows
After an almost progressive rock like introduction, they launch into one of the hardest rocking pieces of the set. There is almost a metal edge to this. Still, it is tempered with many of the sounds we’ve heard throughout the set. It’s got a real pop rock vibe to it.
Black Eyes
Reggae, jazz and more merge here. This is a catchy and energetic number that’s classic and infectious. There is a real Motown kind of vibe to it.
Rave Bird
This has some psychedelia, funk and more in the mix. It’s hard rocking with some really screaming guitar. Yet, the whole tone is soulful and melodic. This is one of my favorite tunes here. It definitely feels like something that could have come out of the 1970s. It gets kind of noisy and trippy later.
Ponytails
A short little piece, this has a real psychedelic, dreamy texture.
See Her Changing
This screaming hot rocker is both psychedelic and modern at the same time.
Asleep
If there is a song that doesn’t work here, this is it. This just seems to lack direction and magic. It’s kind of psychedelic, kind of modern and just not all that great. There is a bit of a punk edge to it at times, too.
Joe Schmo
There is a weird, slightly off key and out of tune, trippy vibe to this. At its core, though, it’s kind of a Beach Boys type thing. Weird as it is, it’s pretty cool.
