Dream Theater

When Dream And Day Reunite DVD

Review by Greg Olma

Dream Theater is truly a prog band of the people, by the people, and for the people. I can’t think of a band that really has such a close tie with their fans. They used to have special Christmas CDs for fan club members, they play fan club gigs, and now they put out their own “bootlegs” so to speak (put out on their own label imprint Ytsejam Records). The word “bootleg” has negative connotations and what you are getting here is top quality material. This release is a multi camera shoot of a very special evening where the band plays the entire When Dream And Day Unite album. Charlie Dominici (original singer on that release) shows up and joins the band on stage for that performance along with encores “To Live Forever” and “Metropolis.” If that wasn’t enough, Mike Portnoy has collected footage through the years and we get interviews from 1988/89 along with old bootleg footage of a few of the tracks.

The product that Dream Theater put out here is on par with the “bigger releases” so you know there is going to be bonus footage. We get rehearsal footage, audio commentary, and best of all, a 70 minute documentary with some great live clips thrown in there. You can tell a lot of time and effort went into making this DVD something special. Although you can’t get it at retailers, you can easily purchase it straight from Dream Theater at www.ytsejamrecords.com. Unlike some of the inferior products that other bands peddle on their sites or at their shows, When Dream And Day Reunite is a top quality release and deserves to be a part of any prog metal collection.
