The Making of A Night At The Opera DVD

Review by Gary Hill

When it comes to classic albums of the 1970's it seems that Queen's A Night At The Opera should be on most people's short list. Therefore it seems very appropriate that Eagle Vision created this DVD documenting the making of the album. This is a pretty impressive set just packed with stuff.

The disc tells the story through snippets of the music, live performance clips and interviews of just how the album came to be. While John Deacon has withdrawn from the music industry and therefore did not make himself available for interviews, there are plenty of insightful interviews here. Archival clips of Freddy Mercury tell much of his side of the story and both Brian May and Roger Taylor participated in the production with new interviews. If that weren't enough the producers of this video also spoke with Roy Thomas Baker and many people who were either fans of the album or involved on the sidelines. The end result is a video that is without question a must have for fans of Queen. The truth of the matter is, though, anyone interested in knowing the workings of creating a masterpiece of music - especially knowing how it was done in the days before computers infiltrated the studio - should check this one out. I find it hard that there is anyone who knows enough about the process that they will walk away feeling like they didn't learn anything new.

I've never really seen a piece of work quite this good before. It is very detailed, but still manages to entertain. In fact, I'd have to say that it's downright captivating. This one comes extremely highly recommended.
