John Lennon

Imagine & Gimme Some Truth DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This brand new DVD is a very cool thing. It includes two features along with some bonus material. Both of these features on their own would be great. Having them together on one disc makes this a must have value. The bonus stuff is just the icing on the cake.

The first of the features is "Imagine." As you might guess, it's focused on the album of the same title. That album was in so many ways ground-breaking, and so, really, is this video feature. It was produced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono at the time of the album's release. It is an artistic adventure that essentially creates a video album based around the music of the source disc. As such it was sort of a precursor to the whole MTV video phenomenon. The video segments move between deeply artistic to the point of being rather "out there," to more down to Earth and playful. As a whole, it is both entertaining and very creative.

The second feature is "Gimme Some Truth," and it is a film focusing on the behind the scenes process of recording the Imagine album in the studio. It shines a lot of light on different takes of the songs and the process involved in creating something. Watching this will give the viewer a new perspective on the album with which he or she is familiar. It also shines a lot on some of the work involved in creating an album.

John Lennon was incredibly talented. He was a great songwriter, a visionary artist and a strong performer. These two features show different sides of his talent. Additionally there are some bonus features that include more in studio footage based around original raw versions of several songs and extra footage from a photo shoot that was used in the first feature. All of these things make this a must have for anyone who has ever liked John Lennon.
