Kiss

The Vintage DVD

Review by Greg Olma

There have been a whole host of Kiss DVDs out on the market not including the “official” releases from the band.  Since I have been a Kiss fan since 1975, I have always been fascinated by, not only images of them, but also any live footage of their concerts.  Kiss themselves released a treasure trove of material in their three volumes of Kissology, but I always knew there were other videos out there that true hardcore fans would want.  The Vintage puts together a nice little group of video that some fans may have seen, but it also includes two silent 8mm features that I have previously not seen anywhere else.  There is some video from a November 17, 1977 concert in Colorado that is pretty cool, although there are some heads and hands in the way.  This 8mm movie gives a real “fan’s eye” view of the show and, although silent, you can tell some of the songs they were playing.  For instance, Paul Stanley has a fire helmet on, and Gene Simmons blows fire at the end, so every Kiss fan can deduce that they were playing “Firehouse.” The more rare and worthwhile of the 8mm footage is the 16 minutes from 1974 that pre-dates the Hotter Than Hell album.  Although it is not up to today’s standards of crispness and clarity, it is a dream come true to have such old material to watch.  These 16-minutes of footage make this DVD a must have for any Kiss fan.  Included in this DVD are  interviews from 1977 and 1983 along with various bits and pieces that round off this release.  I mentioned earlier that I have been a Kiss fan for quite some time and, although I have seen (and purchased) a lot of video material, this DVD collection of 8mm footage makes it worth every penny.
