Floyd Cruse & Darkstar Band

Live in Portland, Oregon, May 2012

Review by Larry Toering

Floyd Cruse Dark Star Band is one smooth R&B outfit with everything including soul, funk, reggae, blues and even jazz factors. There’s a pop groove to some of it, as well. This is altogether one of those great combos that can't be denied. This groovy bunch of excellent musicians simply tore the house down, and had the crowd dancing all night to their assortment of classic R&B covers while celebrating the new release, which is a fine one at that. This band is a must see in the Portland night club scene, and Cruse has been out there doing things like appearing in the TV show entitled “Portlandia.”

They wasted no time in getting right to the point with the lead track from the CD, titled “Don't Hit My Daughter,” and proceeded to simply rock with tons of soul and plenty of humor to loosen the place up. Most of the covers were right up my alley, and other tracks from the disc, like “Nobody,” for instance, sound even better in a live setting. This took me by the ear quickly as I noticed it early on, and it didn't stop all night. These guys really put on a fun show and it was felt more and more as the night went on. Everything went over very well from my perspective, and it seemed that the band were all not only on fire, but having a ball all the way, just kicking it in jam after jam.
