Al Di Meola
Speak A Volcano DVD
Review by Gary Hill
For my money Al Di Meola is one of a handful of real guitar masters in the world. He is a master of both the electric and acoustic guitar, although much of his more recent career has focused on the latter. Speak A Volcano presents a return to the electric venue and what a triumphant re-entry it is. Well filmed and with a great sound quality, this DVD captures a killer concert. For those who have been hearing about Di Meola and want to see what all the fuss is about I can’t imagine a better place to start. One thing in particular I like is the way the camera finds plenty of chances to focus in on Di Meola’s hands while he’s playing – and how he makes it look simple. Whether you are a long time fan, a new comer to his style of fusion or just a guitarist looking for inspiration, this DVD is a killer and comes highly recommended. For those budding guitarists out there, the second of the bonus features is a “must have.” Di Meola includes a ten minute or so series of guitar tips, explaining them and demonstrating on an acoustic guitar. The other bonus here is an insightful interview. It all combines to make a great package, but the concert video (as it should) steals the show. The music is magical and the show is captured exceptionally well. To those involved in the making of this, a huge “Bravo!” goes out.
