Richard Thompson Band

Live at Rockpalast DVD/CD Set

Review by Gary Hill

This is another set that includes both DVDs and CDs, leaving it a bit confusing as to placement at MSJ. Once again, since it is listed on the cover as DVDs plus CDs, I've opted to include this in the video section.

I consider this to be a prog rock release. It's not that all the music here is prog, but some of it is, and most of it has at least some prog tendencies. The thing is, Richard Thompson was a founding member of Fairport Convention, and that band's considered prog, so this makes the cut.

There are three CDs of the music here, and two DVDs. Those DVDs are the record of two different shows - one from December 1983 and the other January 84. The first show is the longer one, which is why it's spread over two CDs while the other one is only on one. On the other hand, the second DVD includes an interview. While that's the only bonus material, you really can't complain. Despite the cover image the video is in color. The quality is quite good for the time, but perhaps not up to modern standards. Still, it's definitely "good enough." The performances are strong, too. There is some awesome guitar work on display here, but a lot of other great music, too.

In the end, this is a great set, and an excellent value. You really get a lot of stuff for your hard-earned cash. I'd heartily recommend this to all fans of Thompson's work, either solo or with Fairport Convention.
