La Próxima Traición

Review by Gary Hill

This is an intriguing set. The music here lands along the lines of world music, but it's a bit more eclectic than that. It's instrumental music. It's also played on just two instruments, bandoneon and piano. The bandoneon is sort of a small accordion. I have to say that accordion is one of two instruments I generally don't like, but this works well. Perhaps it's because it's not precisely an accordion. Perhaps it's because of the skill and style of the player. Most likely it's a little of both. All that said, this is an unusual and effective release.

Track by Track Review
La Proxima Traicion
A blast of world music starts things here. Then piano takes control. The piece works onward with a lot more world music in the mix. This is rather playful and fun.
Comme Il Faut
Classically styled music is on the menu here, but delivered with plenty of that world music tradition. I get the feeling of hanging out in a French cafe.
El Irresistible
Bouncy piano brings this into being. The arrangement fills out after a time and we're into more entertaining world music territory.
Guapeando
This is another fun romp through world music zones.
Camandulaje
The piano on this really weaves some potent melodies and creates some real magic.
Desde el Alma
This is packed full of more European styled world music. Its exploratory and entertaining.
Negracha
Bouncy and fun, this is has some great classical music concepts in a tango sort of arrangement. This gets rather freeform and experimental before it's over.
Milonga Del Angel
A mellower and more restful piece of music, there are some almost proggy elements added into the cafe-styled sonic tapestry. This is one of my favorite pieces of the whole set. This gets quite evocative and powerful before it's over.
Mi Refugio

I really dig the world music vibe of this number. It's energetic and works well.

Quejas de Bandoneon
Here we get a bouncy and fun world music romp.
La Yumba

While this is not a big change at all, it is another entertaining world music romp. It has plenty of classical music in the mix, too.
