Ranzel X Kendrick

Foreglow

Review by Gary Hill

You can generally count on quality from Ranzel X Kendrick, and this collection is no exception. The music here is generally on the mellower side. There is a decent range within, but a jazzy sort of vibe is the most frequent visitor here. Everything on this disc has its charms, and the whole thing works pretty well as a complete set.

Track by Track Review
Cross My Heart
A tasty acoustic guitar arrangement starts the album. Some Island drums join, and the whole piece has a slightly jazzy, tropical kind of sound. The layers of vocals bring so much class. This is a particularly effective number, both because of the songwriting and the vocal harmonies.
River of Love
There is some jazz in the mix here, but this is more of a folk music tune. It has an unusual construction in some ways. It's not as strong as the opener was, but it has some intriguing things about it.
Virtuous Woman
Now, this cool jazz meets world music groove is another of the winners here. It's so much fun. It has a great groove and some cool melodic hooks.
Lonely Tonight
There is a soulful vibe to this cut. It has plenty of jazz in the soft rock styled arrangement. This is evocative and strong.
Slow Dancing in the Rain
The most complete arrangement of this set, this qualifies as mainstream soulful rock music. It's a slow tune, but it's also full of class and style.
