David Lockwood

The Rest is History

Review by Gary Hill

This album is quite strong from start to finish. It's set in a singer-songwriter zone, but there is quite a bit of variation here. At times it feels very jazzy. At other points it moves towards Dire Straits like rock. It's always solid and entertaining.

Track by Track Review
Blue on Blue
Starting as a piano and vocal tune, this grows into some pretty classic sounding singer-songwriter music. I'm reminded of both Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. The backing vocals and electric guitar bring something special to later portions of this number.
Ko Ko Sioux
I dig the keyboard sound on this. It lends a bit of a retro jazzy angle. The cuts has a little Dire Straits kind of sound, too. This is another classy number. I absolutely love the guitar solo on this thing.
Away From Here
A piano and voice dominated tune, this has a classy balladic vibe to it.
Still Alone
More of a rocking number, this has a lot of style and charm. It's a lot of fun.
There Must Be
A slow moving number, this has real pretty charm to it. It's got a little bit of a dreamy aspect. This is another that makes me think of both Waits and Cohen.
Find My Way
A slow-moving piano and vocal arrangement gets this underway. This works out to quite an involved and classy arrangement. I particularly love some of the bass playing on this track.
Julie
This song is nearly all piano and voice. It's a potent and intimate ballad.
More Brads
This opens with female vocals. This tune has a lot of jazz in the mix. This is such a cool tune. I think it might be my favorite here. It just has so much charm and style.
Automobile
This number is cut from much the same jazz cloth as the last one was. It's also one of the highlights of the disc. I really love the piano soloing on this tune. The whole thing has such a great groove to it. The guitar solo is all class, too.
Twenty-Seven Ways To Fall In Love
I dig this classy number. It's more rock based, perhaps, but there is still plenty of jazz in the mix, too. I love the guitar work on the tune.
Starlet
This is such a powerful and pretty number. It has a slow ballad approach to it. It has some real magic in the layers of sound over the top of the arrangement.
Live On
This number isn't a huge change, but it is another solid entry to the track-list of this set. It is more of the singer-songwriter rock approach.
Billy's Little World
Here we get another tune that makes me think of Dire Straits. It's a classy song that's among the highlights of the disc. There is some classy guitar soloing on this thing.
Keep On
Another rocker, this is also another of the standouts. It's meaty and so tasty. It makes a nice closer.
