Mimo

Mars Took Over

Review by Gary Hill

Mimo is an intriguing artist, with an emphasis on the "art" portion of that equation. I'd say that the music here lands in a zone that probably qualifies as neo-soul more than it does anything else. However, there is plenty of hip hop here and much more. This has some healthy helpings of art music. I'd consider the closer to be the highlight of this, but everything works well, and it varies quite a bit from one song to another.

Track by Track Review
An Introduction
There is a dramatic and rather mysterious sounding introduction to this cut. The tune works out to something that seems to merge hip hop and art music.
Sunflower Head
I dig the vibraphone sound on this cut. The number has a smooth, mid-tempo groove. It's another with plenty of hip hop in the mix, but also  a lot of R&B angles.
So Far So Good
As solid as the first two pieces were, this really ups the ante. It has such a great R&B groove. There is an artsy angle to this, too.
Funghi
I really like this a lot. The cut has plenty of that artsy angle. It's also set well in an R&B vibe. This does get a parental advisory.
Void of Course
Jazzy concepts, art music and more merge on this. It gets into some strange almost hip hop zones. Overall, though, this is very much an outside of the box piece of art music. It's definitely my favorite piece of the set. It has some unique and unusual twists and turns.
