Vanessa Peters

Modern Age

Review by Gary Hill

I previously reviewed another set from Vanessa Peters, and I liked that one. I'd say this is the stronger of the two, though. The alternative rock meets mainstream pop rock angle of this is very cool. There is not a weak song here, but some do stand taller than others.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2022  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2022.

Track by Track Review
Modern Age
There is a hard-rocking alternative sound that brings this cut into being. It drops down a little for the verses. The vocals have some of that alternative sound along with pop rock in the mix. This is a catchy and energized tune that works well.
Make Up My Mind
A melodic rocker, this has some exceptional moments. It's not hugely unique or original. It is, however, extremely effective. There are some soaring moments, great hooks and so much style and charm.
Crazymaker
There is a great energy to this song. It lands on the soaring side of melodic rock. It has some great hooks and really rocks with so much style.
Valley of Ashes
The one guitar part on this almost brings some funk to the tune. There is nearly a jazz angle here. The tune is another winner. It might be my favorite here. It's just so cool.
Hood Ornament
A more driving rocker, I like this one a lot. It has great energy and grooves.
The Band Played On
There are rich symphonic layers on this song at times. The tune is a cool rocker that is among the strongest stuff here.
Never Really Gone
I really love the dramatic and rather soaring vocals on this tune. The track isn't a big game changer, but it just works so well.
The Weight of This
Melodic rock is on the menu here. It's another solid tune, but not really a standout.
Yes
There are both art rock and punky edges to this number. It's one of the most interesting and effective pieces here. I really like this a lot. This gets a parental advisory n the lyrics.
The Try
This rocker is classy and powerful. It has some intriguing angles built into it.

Still Got Time
Another energetic piece, this has some solid hooks and works well. It makes for a great closer in terms of mood and tone.
