Dwight + Nicole

The Jaguar, The Raven, & The Snake

Review by Gary Hill

This is quite an intriguing set. Probably the biggest selling point is the vocals, but I almost hate to say that. That’s because it sells the musical arrangements short. This covers a lot of poppish territory, but it moves through things like blues, R&B and soul to even work toward artsy shoegaze and alternative pop at times. Most of the time through the album it alternates with Nicole singing lead on one track and Dwight on the nest, but they do break the cycle a little later.

Track by Track Review
The Next Go-Round

There is a slow moving roots music vibe at play here. It’s bluesy and also trippy with an almost shoegaze kind of leaning.

All For You

There is more of a classy pop rock vibe here. This is still slow and rather understated. While the opener featured female vocals, this one is all about the male vocals. There is more of an alternative pop sound here along with some soulful angles.

You and I

Soul music, jazz and more merge here. This is a great tune that leans toward dream pop in some ways. The female vocals are the main ones, but Dwight shows up on here, too.

It's Up To You

This one leans even further into the jazz end of the spectrum. The vocals (Dwight this time) bring some soulful things to bear. Nicole does deliver backing vocals.

Angel

I really like the soulful sound of this tune. Continuing the trend of alternating lead vocal duties, Nicole handles them this time.

Hold Tight

I dig the cool pop rocking groove on this. As you might guess, Dwight handles lead vocals with Nicole handling the backing duties.

Into The Shadows

More trippy and slow moving, this is artsy and has a definite jazz leaning. As you can probably guess, Nicole is the featured vocalist here.

You Better Stop

I don’t need to tell you who does the lead vocals here, do I? This is a funky, bluesy kind of guitar based groove. It’s a cool tune with a real classic texture.

On Your Way To Go

Now, this song features both singers prominently. There is a real drama to this cut. It has soulful vibes, but also some really artsy things.

Do It All Again

The female vocals are in the driver’s seat on this slow moving, classic sounding groove it. It has a bluesy, soulful vibe and is packed with class.

Lift

This is a rocking tune with horns and guitar both lending magic to the mix. It leans more toward pop rocking angles and features male lead vocals.

Bonus Track:

Singing Goodbye

This is soulful and so classy. Nicole handles the lead vocals, but the Dwight’s backing vocals are fairly prominent.
