The Great Kat
God Save The Queen! God Save The King! DVD
Review by Gary Hill
The Great Kat is a bit of a mystery to me, and a study in contrasts. I've previously reviewed another of her videos. This new one features a collection of five short music videos. The whole thing runs ten minutes long. Since there are no bonuses, that is one big caveat here. This is short almost to the point of absurdity.
So, what kind of music does The Great Kat play? Well, she's a shred guitarist. She also plays violin and piano. The music here has elements of metal, but overall it's more like modern classical treatments.
Another trademark of this musician centers around her visual presence. She pretty much always performs while wearing things like bikinis and lingerie. That almost seems to be in contrast to her immense musical talent, but then again, it's a feature of who she is. This whole video is sort of a study in contrasts, with wild rock video production camera angles of performance video seeming almost contrary to the serious nature of a lot of the music. Yet, there is a real bombast to the music, too.
