Godsmack

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview With Godsmack`s Tony from 1999

MSJ: What can you tell me about the new album?
It's good. The name of it's "Awake". It's coming out Halloween and it's already done.
MSJ: What about the track you did for the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack, How did that come about?
We were supposed to do the theme song, but it didn't happen. Limp Bizkit got it. That song on there was an old song we had. We recorded it for the soundtrack.
MSJ: You had a track on the Nativity In Black 2 Sabbath tribute album. How did that one happen?
They called us up. I've been into Sabbath forever.
MSJ: Is the girl on the cover of your first album a real person?
She's a real person. She was in a tattoo magazine. We don't know her.
MSJ: A lot of what is written about Godsmack concerns Sully's Wiccan beliefs. Is that something that the whole band is into, or just him?
That's him. I don't know much about it. I mean, I know just a little bit, just from what I've heard in interviews, but that's about it.
MSJ: Who would you see as your musical influences?
Well, I'm into Zeppelin, Hendrix and old stuff like that. Then I'm into some of the stuff like Korn, Alice In Chains and STP. I mean, I like everything, but those are some of the main ones I'm drawing from.
MSJ: What's been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
We've had a few different ones- a tour bus that broke down and left us stranded. We did a sound check in San Bernadino at a club. Someone left a door open, and some guy jumped over the fence and started axing our van. We had a bus with a trailer, and he started axing the trailer because of the noise. There's been a couple of things like that that have happened.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought?
I bought the Eagles Greatest Hits. That's the last one I bought. We have heavy stuff before the show. Then, afterwards, we come down with something mellow. So, that's that last thing I got.
MSJ: What was the last concert you attended?
I haven't been to any concerts. I mean, we do this almost 4 or 5 days a week. The couple days I'm off I usually take in my hotel room, play my guitar and chill out. So, I haven't been to any concerts lately. I'm trying to think of the last one. I don't even know. It might have been Rob Zombie and Korn like a year ago. We were on tour. We happened to be in town and on an off-day. So we went to see them.
