Michelle Renia

Interviewed by Gary Hill
Interview with Michelle Renia from 2012
MSJ:

You are an artist (in the traditional sense of the word) and it seems the music you create is meant as a companion piece to your artist. Which came first for you, art or music?

Music came first. It is as if it is an extension of my inner voice expressing my deep emotions.
MSJ: What do you think music allows you do that art doesn’t and vice versa?
I find expressing emotions more natural through music and I am able take my listeners on a journey. Art, on the other hand, to me is more static a snap shot of an event or emotion. It does not allow me to move from one mood to another in a single performance.
MSJ: Who would you see as your musical influences?
The classical era - Beethoven and Mozart
MSJ: What about artistic influences?
Abstract Expressionism
MSJ: What's ahead for you?
Song placements in the movie industry.
MSJ: I know artists hate to have their music pigeonholed or labeled, but how would you describe your music?
Mood music
MSJ: Are there musicians with whom you would like to play with in the future?
Maxim
MSJ: Do you think that illegal downloading of music is a help or hindrance to the careers of musicians?
For someone new to the industry probably not a hindrance, as this means your music is getting more exposure. Once established, one would hope that the fans would actually pay for the originals.
MSJ: In a related question, how do you feel about fans recording shows and trading them?
strictly no
MSJ: If you were to put together your ultimate band (a band you'd like to hear or catch live), who would be in it and why?
Piano duet with Maxim, it would be full of energy and excitement.
MSJ: What was the last CD you bought and/or what have you been listening to lately?
Galapogas Duck - very unusual acoustics and melody
MSJ: What has been your biggest Spinal Tap moment?
When Wayne Thompson critiqued my “Replicate 1”
MSJ: If you could sit down to dinner with any three people, living or dead, for food and conversation, with whom would you be dining?
Maxim, Lee Morgan (also known as Lee Sonny Boy), Barbara Streisand (she is amazing)
MSJ: What would be on the menu?
Lobster and caviar
MSJ: Are there any closing thoughts you would like to get out there?
My music and art is an insight to a part of me, my purpose is to express my emotions experienced at that moment. Spontaneous expressions are the key. They are my captured moments.
MSJ: This interview is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.
