Dream Theater

Dream Theater - Lifting Shadows written by Rich Wilson

Review by Greg Olma

Dream Theater have always been a band of the fans and whenever it came to releasing product, they always went the extra mile to give the fans something special. This book set is proof of that.  I challenge any band to give their fans the consistent quality that these 5 guys have done.

To make this a special item, the guys have given Rich Wilson access to their stories first hand.  Things that we may not have known like Mike Portnoy's difficulties with drugs and alcohol and the fact that James LaBrie was close to becoming an ex-member are just a couple of the tidbits found in this tell all biography.  Spanning 344 pages, the book goes through each record, tour, and event with enough detail without being weighed down like a text book.  It is an easy and interesting read for hardcore and casual fans alike.

But as I mentioned, this is a set, and the second book "Images" is just that, a visual trip down memory land.  There are over 170 pages of photos and scans of Dream Theater items that cover their entire career from Majesty through Systematic Chaos.  And if that wasn't enough, there is a CD included that contains 11 rare tracks from either from their bootleg CDs or their fan club CDs.  All of this is housed in a red slipcase with a silver Dream Theater logo stamped on the side.  You won't find this package at Amazon but you can get it from their website.  I highly recommend this book set not just because I am a fan but because of the care and quality that was put into it.
