Shawn Mullins

Live at the Variety Playhouse DVD

Review by Gary Hill

If you have a hankering for the folk driven singer sougwriter sound that were so popular in the 1970’s then Shawn Mullins should be your man. He does the style as well as anyone. This concert film captures him on the live stage. Like many practitioners of this musical art form, Mullins excels in this format.  I’d never heard Mullins before, but I’ll definitely be checking him out in more detail. I like what I heard. If you are a fan you really need to pick this up. The performance is great and the videography and sound are quite good. There aren’t a lot of bonuses (we get an interview a music video and photo gallery) but the concert is a strong enough item that it doesn’t really matter if there are any bonuses.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2008  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.
