The Sun Ra Arkestra

Points on A Space Age DVD

Review by Gary Hill

For those who don’t know who Sun Ra is, you would find it hard to describe the man and his musical creations. Part jazz, part progressive rock, part theater, part weirdness, part spirituality, part earthy – this music and man encompassed a lot of diverse things. More than anything else it was pure art, though. This documentary is quite an intriguing introduction to this unique artist. I’d recommend it heartily to anyone looking to understand this phenomenon. It goes without saying that fans will eat up all the live clips and other cool material.
