Johnny Winter

Live from Japan DVD

Review by Gary Hill

The performance captured here is great. The band is just plain on fire. The video and sound are both quite good. Personally, I think the vocals were too far down in the mix, though. There’s an annoyance here that’s found in a lot of concert films where bits of interview are interspersed amongst the live footage. There doesn’t appear to be a way (short of the index button) to play it without those. I have no idea why film-makers insist on doing that. More importantly, in the era of DVDs and menus within, I have no idea why they don’t at least include a setting for playing the concert without the interviews. That aside, though, this is a good live concert video of a great performance.
