Pat Metheny

The Orchestrion Project DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Wow, I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this, but I love it. I mean, I knew that Metheny was talented, there’s no question there. I also knew that I loved his music. The whole Orchestrion Project was the real question. I was fascinated by it. A quick explanation would be to call it an organic version of Frippertronics, but this is so much more. Real instruments get automation to play a real time musical score while Metheny plays over it. It’s amazing. I’m sure there are some who will argue about the validity or whatever, but as a project and a document of that project, this is just plain awesome. I highly recommend it.
