John Coltrane

Jazz Icons: John Coltrane Live in '60, '61 & '65 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

As far as I'm concerned, when it comes to jazz, you just don't get much better than John Coltrane. I guess I'm probably not going out on a limb with that statement. He was truly one of the greatest who ever lived. My all-time favorite jazz album is one of his.

The thing is, there isn't that much video out there of Coltrane. This more than hour-and-a-half DVD features three concert performers. The first of those features him playing Miles Davis' music with Davis' band, while the others are his own performances.

If you are a fan of jazz in general or Coltrane specifically, this is such a great collection. Sure, it's a product of its time in terms of video and audio quality. It's a treasure in terms of historical value and the performances themselves.
