Dark Sanctuary: The Story Of The Church Blu-Ray
 Review by Gary Hill

There are so many magical places and times, especially when it comes to music venues. The thing is, most of the time when you are in the midst of something truly special, you probably don’t recognize the significance. Sure, you enjoy the shows, the vibe and the whole scene, but there is a side of human nature that allows us to think that something has permanence when it really doesn’t it. For that reason, we don’t really appreciate a scene as we should until it is gone.
This is a documentary about one those clubs and scene, the Dallas, Texas Goth club The Church. That scene has more permanence than a lot did, running nearly 30 years. This documentary uses interviews with famous musicians, patrons and more local acts to weave together a compelling story of an important scene that certainly lives in the fond memories of many people.
There are also clips from the past included here to breathe even more life into the whole tale. I’m sure you probably have your own clubs and scenes that you remember fondly. This might even remind you at times of yours. It also gives a good look into special times that others enjoyed. It will certainly make those who were there wish they could go back. Perhaps more poignantly, it makes some of us who weren’t there wish we had been.
