Ted Nugent

If You Can't Lick 'Em...Lick 'Em

Review by Gary Hill

Another in a series of Ted Nugent reissues, this period of the Nuge’s career seemed to find him struggling with his musical identity. Of the bunch, though, this disc is the strongest because it stays true to Ted Nugent’s musical spirit and roots. It’s a great album that will stand up with any from his catalog.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Can't Live With 'Em
The disc opens with this straight-ahead rocker. It’s a real screamer and a great tune. It’s got some definite metal elements to it.  It’s a great way to lead off with a scorcher.
She Drives Me Crazy
This isn’t quite as strong as the opener, but it does get in, get out and get the job done.
If You Can't Lick 'Em...Lick 'Em
The riff that opens this is classic Nugent. The only complaint on this one is the silly backing vocals. Beyond that, this is vintage Ted The Sledge. The guitar soloing on this is especially tasty.
Skintight
This one’s a little more average. It’s not bad, just not up to the level of the first three. Still, there’s some killer guitar soloing.
Funlover
Not breaking any molds, this is a strong rocker, nonetheless, and a step back in the right direction. The instrumental section mid track is especially effective.
Spread Your Wings
This might be considered a misstep. A bluesy, balladic number, this feels more like Robert Cray than Ted Nugent. The thing is, it’s done so well that it still works.
The Harder They Come (The Harder I Get)
Here we get a straight-ahead rock and roll cut. This is gritty and a bit like Ted Nugent meets The Sex Pistols and the Rolling Stones.
Separate The Men From The Boys, Please
This isn’t anything all that special. It’s OK, but not really a standout.
Bite The Hand
This scorcher is very classic Nuge in nature. It’s arguably the strongest cut on show here.
That's The Story Of Love
Another strong cut, this one pales just a bit in comparison to the previous one.
