Hello, Goodbye (Digital Single)

Review by Vivian Lee
"You say goodbye / and I say hello/ hello, hello / I don't know why you say goodbye / I say hello.."

Many have heard scores of covers of The Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye" (it's even been in a national chain television ad), but I found heavy-prog rockers Magellan's interpretation of The Fab Four's iconic song to be just as  listenable, danceable, "singalongable" as the original.  I say "interpretation" rather than "cover" because it's obviously got the band's musical fingerprints all over it (singer/keyboardist Trent Gardner getting on well vocally with guest vocalist Rob Lopez most notably; and the tiny quiet odd drum parts in the background).  It's a tip of the hat to a band who's influenced Magellan's sound, rather than a slavish note for note copy.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
Track by Track Review
Hello, Goodbye
I was pleasantly surprised at how light this rendition was, given how heavy Magellan's usual fare often is, and I had fun listening to "Hello, Goodbye."

(Editor's Note - Music Street Journal is set up for the allocation of albums, not singles - particularly not one-song singles. So, in the instances, like this one, where we've covered single song releases, we've had to make some adaptations for formatting. In the case of this one, just imagine both track review and overall review reading as one set of copy. )
