True Nature

You Shouldn't Have To Shout So Loud

Review by Gary Hill

I’ve placed this one in the progressive rock section of Music Street Journal. I’m sure there are progressive rock purists who will argue with that. Certainly there are straight rock and alternative rock elements here. That said, there are plenty of links to modern prog in the mix. Whatever you call this, though, it’s a very effective set of songs. It works quite well. It’s sure to please a pretty wide range of listeners. It’s a safe bet that even those prog purists will dig this if they give it a fair chance.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2014  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
You Shouldn't Have To Shout So Loud

Opening with an almost funky guitar sound, this turns to something that feels a bit like modern Rush. That said, the vocals bring more of a straight rock and roll vibe. There are some shifts and turns here, making this more of a pure modern progressive rock sound in a lot of ways. I really dig the guitar solo on this a lot.

Only Love
I really like this one. The sound is more of a modern jam band meets progressive rock band. There are some more straightahead sections to this one, but there are also some cool space rock elements in place.
One Soul
This is quite a cool piece. It’s more or less mellower than the first couple tracks. There is a real modern progressive rock vibe to it. There’s a rather soaring movement mid-track, too. The vocal arrangement on this seems more fully developed and intriguing and it’s a great piece of music.
My Freedom Lies Behind The Sun (Intro)

This fairly short piece has a dreamy kind of modern progressive rock vibe to it.

My Freedom Lies Behind The Sun (Radio Edit)

Coming out of the previous piece, this is a cool rocker. It’s arguably more alternative rock than progressive rock, but there is still quite a bit in common with some of the more modern prog.

New Father

There is a bit of that Rush sort of sound in place here. Otherwise, this is sort of an alternative rocker that’s pretty cool. It’s not a big change, but it works well as closing tune.
