Barry White

Can’t Get Enough (Vinyl)

Review by Gary Hill

It’s actually a cliché, Barry White’s music is all about romance and seduction. The truth is, it’s well earned. The man used sultry musical arrangements and his deep voice (alternating between spoken and sung sections) to create music that probably inspired (or at least accompanied) more love sessions than just about any other artist. Well, this is the first time White’s music has gotten the audiophile treatment. Audio Fidelity has released this 1974 release as a limited numbered edition 180g vinyl LP. This release is also the first time the lyrics have been included with this album. This is a classy release and a great album. It’s a real winner.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2014  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Side One
Mellow Mood (Pt. I)
Coming in gradually, this is a powerful and very pretty piece. It is a jazzy number that is just oozing with cool and class. It’s a reasonably short instrumental.
You're The First, The Last, My Everything
This comes in with a spoken word section over a pretty sparse, rhythmically driven backdrop. We’re taken from there into an energetic soul jam that’s got a lot of symphonic instrumentation over the top.
I Can't Believe You Love Me
At almost ten and a half minutes in length, this is a real epic piece. It starts with mellow jazzy sounds. White speaks over the top and the effect is sultry and powerful, while understated. The saxophone adds a lot to the mix. The piece gradually gets more oomph. Nothing here changes fast, but it keeps evolving and growing. It’s just such a classy number. It’s got jazz, soul and more built into it. It’s also a great love groove song.
Side Two
Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
As good as the first side was, I think I like this better than anything there. It’s got such a great jazzy soul groove to it. White’s vocals are just about perfect. This is a great tune, plain and simple.
Oh Love, Well We Finally Made It
This energetic romp is another classy tune. The arrangement is just about perfect with strings, female backing vocals and saxophone adding the magic. Of course, White’s vocal performance is top-notch. It’s just another great soul groove on a disc that’s full of them.
I Love You More Than Anything (In This World Girl)
There’s not any huge change here, but this is in some ways more of a catchy track. It’s a little faster paced, but doesn’t sacrifice any of the cool to get there.
Mellow Mood (Pt. II)
As one might guess from the title, this carries on the themes of the opening piece. It’s another instrumental and serves as a great bookend to the album.
