Antigravity

Review by Gary Hill

The one central factor that runs through this, is the female voice. Beyond that, there is quite a bit of range. We get some country, things like the Pretenders, psychedelia, Heart, early Blondie and even some shoegaze. Sometimes those things are mashed up within a single song. It all works quite well, though. I like this one a lot.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Antigravity

This hard rocker starts the set in style. It’s part Heart and part Pretenders. It’s all cool.

Thin Air
I love the backwards tracked bit on this song. The piece is a mellower, more melodic one. It’s closer to modern pop rock sounds.
No Pleasing You
With some hints of country music, this rocker again makes me think of The Pretenders quite a bit.
How Was I To Know
A melodic number, this is more pop rock and less of the pure rock end of the equation. It’s got a cool modern sound. It’s also pretty catchy and includes some great guitar soloing.
Lost My Nerve
A slower cut, this has both country and psychedelic rock in the mix. It’s one of the coolest songs here. It’s also one of the most “different.” It does get a bit of a parental advisory on the lyrics, though.
Panic Attack
Another highlight, this reminds me a lot of early Blondie. It’s a real rocker that’s extremely fun.
The Pendulum
This might be my favorite song here. There are hints of world music in the mix, but it’s got a real alternative rock vibe. It’s close to shoegaze music in some ways. Whatever you call it, though, this is powerful and very dramatic.
Shaken
This has more of a standard pop rock vibe. That said, the instrumental rock brings some real 1970s rock to the table. The vocal performance on this cut is particularly strong.
There Goes My Man
I like this one, but it’s not as strong as some of the rest. It is a fun little rocker, though.
Stay
A mellower piece, this reminds me a little of the Motels.
