Blessid Union of Souls

Live at Never on Sunday

Review by Gary Hill

This live album comes with a companion DVD. That DVD includes one extra song. The performance is a strong one that runs along an alternative rock kind of path. There is quite a bit of variety within that scope, but overall this fits well in the alt rock/pop venue. There are highlights, but no real losers in the set.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review

The spacey alternative rock sounds on the first parts of this work quite well. There are more straight forward rocking sounds later in the piece. I love the funky guitar sounds we get at points, too. There is a short audience singalong on this number.

I Wanna Be There

Starting with folky acoustic guitar, the vocals come in over the top of that. It eventually powers out into more rocking territory. I really dig the guitar solo on this thing.

Oh Virginia
This reminds me a bit of Lenny Kravitz in some ways. It has a great rocking groove and some solid hooks.
Standing at the Edge of the Earth
Alternative based pop rock, this is a very accessible piece of music. I love the keyboard sounds on this. It’s one of the highlights of the set.
Brother My Brother

A higher energy rocker, this is also very strong. It has almost an alternative rock meets 1970s rock sound to me.

That’s the Girl That I’ve Been Telling You About

Not a huge change, this is another effective slab of the kind of alternative rocking these guys do. There is an intriguing little excursion into space music mid-track, though.

My Friend
This is more of a powered up ballad. It rocks pretty well and has a lot of emotion packed into it.
Sweet Providence

An entertaining jam, this is a cool groove. It has some great guitar soloing, too.

Forever for Tonight / Let Me Be the One
Although in some way this two-fer piece is more of the same, we do get some cool jazz jamming.
Higher Calling
No big change, this is another solid rocker.
Light in Your Eyes
A lot of this cut is piano based. The song rocks out, but is more of a ballad really.
I Believe
Piano and vocals make up the bulk of this. It’s a power ballad, really. It’s pretty and powerful. It’s more rocking later.
Hey Leonardo (She Likes Me for Me)

This energetic rocker is a fun one. It’s one of the highlights of the set. It’s very catchy.

Lucky To Be Here
As the piano starts this, I just keep thinking, “I wish the audience would just shut up.” As the vocals join that is no longer a problem because the music rises above the crowd. This is another highlight of the set, continuing to build as it moves along. In fact, there are parts of this that aren’t that far removed from progressive rock.
