Ian Danter

Second Time Around

Review by Gary Hill

This rocking disc lands in the neighborhood of 80s metal. It’s got a lot of catchy rock hooks built into it. There is a good range here. It’s all quite effective really.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2016  Volume 1 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
If My Truth Is a Lie

The guitar riff that opens this definitely makes me think of Kiss. The cut grows out from there into more of a glam rock styled tune. I can hear some Sweet in it, really.

Mr Poison
This really screams out of the gate. It has a very metal sound to it. Again, Kiss is a good reference point, too. This is less of a glam rock thing and more of a pop metal tune.
Chinese Whispers
More of a melodic cut, this is one of my favorites here. It has elements of AOR prog in play. It’s catchy and classy.
Love Fatigue
More of a straightahead rocker, this reminds me just a little of Cheap Trick. There is also some old school REO in the mix. It’s a cool number that’s fun.
Second Time Around
The title track is more of a power ballad. It’s accessible and a little proggy. It’s one of the standouts for sure.
We Believed
With a Beatles kind of element, this has a lot of 1950s rock in the mix. It’s a fun number. It again has some hints of Cheap Trick built into it.
It All Comes Back to Rock
This hard rocker is another that’s quite metallic. It’s screaming hot and very cool.
Simple as That
Now, this makes me think of both Kiss and 80s metal bands like Poison. It’s another cool piece.
I Didn't Get Where I Am Today
Definitely set in that kind of hair metal sound, this stomper is catchy and fun.
I Love You More
With an arrangement that’s just piano and voice, this is a great ballad. It’s energized and catchy.
Better off out of It (Than Worse off Dead)
Another 80s metal styled stomper, this is a tune about a gold digger. It’s a real rocker.
