No Turning Back

Review by Gary Hill

This is a very classy EP. The music here is soulful and vital. The vocals are powerful in tone and delivery. The music almost always retro tinged at least. In many cases it calls to mind the sounds of the 70s. Yet, there are often modern things here, as well. This just such a cool set, really.

Track by Track Review
Hell or Heaven

Old school soul music is merged with hip hop as the major influences on this cut. The horn section, and some of the arrangement, brings some jazz to the table. This is a classy tune that’s both retro in texture and modern at the same time. I love the rhythm and groove of the rap.

I Tried
With a lot of blues and funk in the mix, this is a more modern sounding soulful tune. It still has some jazz along with some retro stylings. I love the vocal performance and the funk guitar. That said, everything here just works really well.
Sunlight
This feels like a slice of 1972 for the bulk of the piece. The rap brings it into the modern age. In a lot of ways the cut seems like something Will Smith might do. It’s another classy number.
My Present
The hooks on this are so catchy and powerful. The horns bring some great texture. This is just such a cool groove. It’s one of my favorite tunes of the set, really.
Gotta Be Happy
There is a bit of a jam goes funky soul vibe to this. I love this song. As good as all the rest are, this might be my favorite here. There is sort of a trippy, dreamy kind of element hearing that gets rather soaring.
A Real Man
Soul, jazz and more merge here. This is another tune that is retro in texture. It has a lot of blues rock built into its DNA, too. This is such a cool song. The vocal arrangement is one of the best here. Given the competition, that says a lot.
