This is a new album of cover songs by an act whose music lands between electronic and techno sounds. I like some of this quite a bit. There are some obvious choices that fit well within the sound of this act like "Tainted Love" and "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record." Other covers are unexpected like "Holidays in the Sun" by the Sex Pistols. All in all, this is an interesting set that works quite well.
Lady Shave The set is opened with a cover of a Fad Gadget song. Interestingly enough the various artists tribute I reviewed in this issue of covers of that act includes this artist, but doing a different song. I dig the cool dark techno sounds on this thing. It's electronic and rather heavy. It's also very cool.
Beat My Guest
Originally by Adam Ant, I haven't heard his version. I'm guessing that this kind of punky electronic take is quite different than that rendition would have been, though. This is fast paced and cool.
Tainted Love
I like this cover a lot. It's nota big change from the Soft Cell version, but it feels a bit meaner and meatier.
Man in the Man
I've never heard the original of this by the Killers. Given the dark, techno kind of sound of this, and the sound of the music I have heard from that band, I have to think that this is a lot different from that take. I like this one a lot. It has a cool sonic groove to it.
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)
I've always loved the original of this cut. In some ways this isn't that much different. The vocals are a lot different, but still work well.
Holidays in the Sun
I wouldn't expect a Sex Pistols cover on this set, but that's just what this is. Well, this sounds like the kind of take you would expect - very different from the original. Still, I can finally understand the lyrics.
Heat
While we previously got a version of a song that is probably best known by Soft Cell, that one was a cover for them. This number was actually written by Soft Cell. I dig the cool electronic vibe and groove to this rendition. It's a classy tune.
View from a Bridge
Here we get a cut that was originally done by Kim Wilde. I like the energetic electronic vibe to the tune.
Broken English
Here's another unexpected cover, this time a Marianne Faithfull song. I like the electronic groove of the piece.
Anal Staircase Here's a cover of a song from Coil. It's more of a pure techno/industrial kind of take on the piece. I dig the rhythmic elements at play. This one gets a parental advisory.
