Might Could

Review by Gary Hill

This outfit was formed by Blake English (guitars, drums, bass, banjo, mandolin, vocals) and singer Tori Lund. Along with Bob “Boo” Bernstein (pedal steel guitar), Scarlet Rivera (fiddle) and Bruce Lett (upright bass), they play a brand of country music that's very retro in nature. There is a decent range here within that scope from hard rocking to mellow. This is timeless and potent. Lund's vocals are impeccable and really do form a lo of the core of the sound of this outfit.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2018  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2018.

Track by Track Review
Might Could
This is a killer country tune. I love the powerhouse vocal performance. The whole piece has such a smoking hot country music grind. There is a bit of a rock and roll elements, but in so many ways this is classic old-school country music.
JoJo
Not a huge change, this is another effective piece. I dig some of the slide guitar on this a lot. It is also cut from classic country stylings.
Walking to the Moon
A slower down-home sound is at the heart of this number. I dig the classic country picking sound on the number. This really feels like something that would have been at home on country radio in the 1940s. It's catchy and cool.
On Down the Road
A fast paced country music grind, this is another with a lot of old school sound. The electric guitar work on this is classic in nature. It really works so well, too. This is one of the highlights of the disc, to a large part because of that guitar riffing. This gets a minor parental advisory.
What’s Yours Is Mine
A slower, almost bluesy number, this is every bit as retro styled as the rest of the set. That said, there is perhaps a bit more of a modern edge to this one in some ways. It's another effective number on a very solid set of tunes.
