Skunk Anansie

Live Rockford, IL, September, 1999

Review by Gary Hill

Skunk Anansie differs from many of the newer hard-edged bands in the aspect of versatility. They can cover the aggressive, crunchy territory every bit as well as the Korns of the world, but also do mellow quite effectively
Their attention to melody certainly is also an asset. As the band took the stage, there were murmurs of confusion as to their look from the audience`s mosh contingency. This was drawn by the dreadlocked hairstyle of the bassist Case and black female vocalist Skin. Once the band began belting out their set, everyone was convinced, though.

Skin was a wondrous front person, prowling the stage, throwing the mic stand, standing atop the security fence by the stage,  and even getting down and dirty with guitarist Ace. What impressed this reviewer most, though was the quality and power of her voice. Seldom has a singer's voice sent chills down my spine, but hers did. Couple that with the band's hard rocking tone, catchy melodies, quirky changes, sense of humor and energetic performance, and this is one act that left you wishing        they would play forever. Watch for Skunk Anansie and expect great things from them.
