Review by Gary Hill
What can I say? I just don't get Superjoint Ritual.

I really want to like this band because Hank Williams III seems a very genuine and dedicated musician, but their mix of hardcore and metal just seems to leave me scratching my head in confusion. The live show left me even more bewildered. I remembering seeing lead singer Phil Anselmo's band Pantera open for Black Sabbath several years back, and I had a similar feeling. Also, much the same as that time, I found myself questioning why Anselmo had to spend so much timing ranting between songs. He did the same thing this time out. The SJR faithful were certainly eating it up, though, although it didn't do anything for this reviewer. It's a shame, too, because everyone in the band seems to be good musicians, they just seem more concerned with pushing Anselmo's particular world view than on putting out some good hard edged music. |
