Styx

Live in Albany, Oregon, August 2012

Review by Larry Toering

Getting out to see Styx did not come easy, as this concert at the Oregon Amphitheater was during the Arts and Air Festival, and it was free, so it was actually packed beyond capacity. It was an interesting night because of this venue and the festival for a show like this one, but what a spectacular performance it was! So it was worth everything it took to make it out to this. They had no opening act, but played two of their albums in their entirety, after about four or five songs prior from elsewhere in their catalog.
The albums they played on this night were Pieces Of Eight and The Grand Illusion, and they delivered them with absolute justice. It really was a great trip back in time, with a real fresh twist in that of their replacement for Dennis DeYoung. Larry Gowan is quite the showman indeed, and even though I'd seen a concert on TV with them, he didn't seem to get as much limelight as he did on this occasion. However, both Tommy Shaw and James Young got equal share of the stage, as well, and I just don't recall that when DeYoung was in the band. It was a perfect evening, weather wise, to enjoy such a first class event.

The stage was out on a lake, with a one hundred foot dock running up to it, and gear delivery area through the back side of the stage. Just as the sun started to go down, everything lit up perfectly for an awesome show. There were even fireworks to top it all off. It was one of the best shows of the summer. Styx have apparently lost nothing, as their performance that night proved.
