Uli Jon Roth

Live in Portland, Oregon, February 2013

Review by Larry Toering

After changing rhythm sections about a week prior to this show, it was nice to see Uli Jon Roth's original bass player in the line-up. However, this was a very tiresome show to say the least, as it crushed every bone in the place, with a menacing performance. I simply did not expect it to go on so long and be so exhausting. How they can do this every night and not leave members of the audience laid out on their backs is beyond me, because they simply fried me. It was that awesome, but at the same time so much to absorb that I was nearly out of breath from the heat and the sound in such a small venue for it.

They could've easily cracked the beams in any arena, if you were to ask me. The set was chock full of everything from Scorpion's classics to Electric Sun material and more recent stuff, as well. It was all there for the crowd to eat up, as we stayed pressed together up against the stage all night long. And this was after three bands had already beaten us down. It was like that wasn't enough, the way Uli and company proceeded to peel the paint off the place. Man alive, it was a spectacular show, from which I'm surprised I didn't crawl away myself.

I must give credit to young guitarist Ali Clinton who was there to back the lead guitar lines to give them that fat double-tracked sound. This guy is an amazing talent in his own right, just a teenager up there on world stage with Roth. That explains why it was an all ages show at such a place. The vocalist was great too, but even the young guitarist himself got to take the mic, generously.  Additionally, the second guitarist sang a full track or two. Uli Jon Roth had his usual small share of the vocal duties, as well. This made for an overall one hundred percent magnificent rock concert.
