Django Reinhardt

King of Jazz Guitar DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Django Reinhardt is a legend of the jazz world. With only two fingers on his left hand he was able to create melodies and sounds with his guitar that others could only dream of making. This documentary does not contain any footage of Reinhardt performing. That is probably the one real drawback. The reason for this is simple. There is very little footage floating around out there. What you get is the story of Django Reinhardt told with his music and a narration and highlighted with photos, album covers and recreations. The result is breathtaking and informative. It’s not perfect, but it’s darned good considering what was available to work with.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2007 Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.
