You wouldn’t know it from MSJ, but I’m a big Al Dimeola fan. The reason I say you wouldn’t know it is that this is the first opportunity I’ve had to cover Dimeola. His brand of guitar oriented fusion is simply incredible, and so is his guitar playing. Now that I’ve probably made you think that I’m biased in favor of one of the members of this trio I need to add that, while I have less personal history with the works of either Larry Coryell or Bireli Lagrene, it doesn’t mean I appreciate them any less. Indeed, all three of the guys sharing the stage at this show truly deserve to be there as some of the best guitarists in the genre. No one really steals the show from anyone else. Instead, what you get is a group of guitarists joining together in a mutual display of expertise, virtuosity and tasty riffs. Each man’s instrument is used to complement and build on the others’ sounds in a union of melody and fire that is sometimes beautiful, other times nearly chaotic, but always captivating. This thing is like a dream come true for fans of great fusion guitar.
