Deep Purple

In Concert With The London Symphony Orchestra DVD

Review by Gary Hill

The whole nearly clichéd concept of doing a concert with a symphony orchestra is, thankfully, starting to fall out of style. Just you don’t misunderstand, there are some instances where it works really well, but more often than not it comes across as a gimmicky concept that falls pretty flat. I’d have to say that in this instance, that isn’t the case. Deep Purple (with Concerto For Group and Orchestra in 1970) was one of the pioneers of this concept. Since this isn’t just the group jumping on the bandwagon, there is more integrity and the project works better than many of the others.

The video and audio on this disc are top notch. The performance is also great, with one caveat. They really should have called this “Deep Purple and Friends. In Concert…” because there are numerous guests. In fact, Ian Gillan doesn’t even show up on the first few songs. The appearance of Ronnie James Dio is quite cool, though. Another plus for this DVD is the performance of the entirety of the aforementioned Concert For… That alone is worth the price of admission. This is a great show and a great DVD. It’s just that those looking for Deep Purple might be a bit disappointed by parts of it.
