Yes

9012Live DVD

Review by Greg Olma

This is the visual counterpart to the 9012Live album. Even though both share the same title, they are quite different. While the CD focuses on the solo spots of the 90125 show, the DVD contains more of the songs. Aside form "I've Seen All Good People" and "Starship Trooper," the rest of the material is from the 90125 album. While I find the original release a worthwhile purchase, this DVD is a must have for any Yes fan. Even if you have the original VHS tape, I recommend getting it again just for the bonus material.

That bonus material consists of the main concert but without all of the special effects. There is plenty of concert footage in the original release but it has more of an MTV feel to it. By taking out the special effects, it makes you feel like you are at the show. Steven Soderbergh does a great job of directing this concert film. The camera spends enough time on each subject before moving on. I wish more concert videos were done in this fashion. "Roundabout" is also added in the bonus section. It was originally cut from the final edit of the film. I like that they added it onto this DVD but it would have been better had it been added into the concert film just for consistency sake. We also get 25 minutes of band interviews. Each member is given their time. The best part of the interviews is that they are from the 90125 time period. I'm glad they didn't interview the members now and have them try to remember what things were like back then. Last but certainly not least, Steven Soderbergh adds in a documentary of "a day in the life of Yes" on the 90125 tour. It is interesting to see that being on tour is not all fun and games. It is a job. Overall, this is a carefully crafted package that any music fan can enjoy. I also appreciate the fact that all of the material was in the same time period which gave the whole DVD a consistent feel.
