System of a Down

Dehumanize DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is another in the series of unauthorized biography DVD's coming from Locomotive. This time they turn their attention to System of a Down, a band that I've had little exposure to in the past. For those who are devotees, there should be a warning issued, though. This release is actually the same DVD as Psycho Messiahs, which was released in 2002. The packaging is changed, but really nothing other than the title screen is different in the video. So, if you have that one, you probably don't need this. Of course the other downside to that fact is that there isn't anything here that's related to the last four years. Still, this is a very intriguing biography that is done by people who really love the band. I have to say that after seeing this I have a lot more interest in checking out this outfit. The complaints are the same as the rest of the series. Since these are done without the cooperation and approval of the group, none of their music (nor any exclusive video) is included here. Also on this one the only bonus feature of note is a discography, and like the film it's grossly out of date. Of course, it does include bootlegs, which is a nice bonus.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2006 Volume 4 at lulu.com/strangesound.
