UFO

Showtime DVD

Review by Greg Olma

This DVD is the visual counterpart to the Showtime CD with the main concert containing the same songs in the same running order. That being said, it is a great concert to view. The filming was done with multiple cameras and the cut-aways are minimal. The quality of these shows is mush better than the Too Hot To Handle DVD that just came out. It is also great to see Pete Way back in the band. He was absent on the US leg of the tour with Barry Sparks filling in.

UFO is a band that always gives value for the money and here they prove it by expanding this package to a 2 DVD set. The extras are well worth viewing. Aside from the above mentioned concert, the first disc ends with a "Making of DVD" section (there is a slideshow and discography but I don't think it is really a bonus). The making of segment is worth viewing because it gives you a sense of what goes into making something like a live recording. Disk two contains the real "goodies" as far as bonus material. It starts off with a six song mini-concert recorded in a German studio with string musicians. The true gem in this performance is the inclusion of "Profession of Violence". I have heard many live shows but to the best of my knowledge, this song has never been performed live. Aside from "Love to Love," none of the other songs are repeats from the main concert. There is also a "making of" this studio concert. Pete Way certainly has his own way of playing and this section just goes to show that reading music is not a requirement to be in a rock band. To round off the second disc, the additional bonus material consists of some documentaries (from 2004) and interviews (thank God for subtitles). For those of you who saw this tour in Chicago, if you look closely during the documentary, they do show a little footage of the line outside the House of Blues. If you are a UFO fan, this is a "must have" item.
